On 21st June 2021, Pavel Durov announced Telegram Premium and Telegram monthly users grew to 700 million each month.
Traditional advertising models can expose user trends, locations and likes/dislikes limiting revenue streams for the platform. Facebook, for example, allows you to target people’s preferences, not something you wish to do for a privacy-led platform like Telegram, so advertising models are naturally restrictive.
You can’t easily measure reach or narrow your target audiences, limiting what you can do.
This is where Telegram Premium comes in, costing £4.99 per month. Enough sign-ups would allow Telegram not to sell advertising. In exchange for this support, premium users avoid adverts and enjoy greater limits.
Durov said that 2.5% - 3% of Telegram’s user base signing up for premium would cover their costs.
In June 2022, Telegram announced that 700 million people are using Telegram every month. That’s up from the 500 million users Durov announced in January 2021. According to Statista, Twitter has 229m users.
Telegram is appealing to a growing number of users who have a desire for a reliable, secure messaging platform. It doesn’t have the privacy concerns created around WhatsApp in recent years.
Businesses that aren’t evaluating how Telegram can positively or negatively impact their business should be taking a closer look at it.
